When you roll out of your driveway at 2:00 AM carrying a heavy backpack on a solo gravel bike, you know you aren’t just going for a casual weekend ride. You’re signing up for an endurance test. What started as a goal to conquer Fraser’s Hill turned into a 20-hour marathon filled with pitch-black detours, surprise wildlife encounters, mechanical setbacks, and moments of unexpected camaraderie.
Here is the story of how 200 kilometers and pure grit pushed me to my absolute limits.

1. Into the Pitch Black: 4:00 AM Detours & Stealth Cows
Fueled only by a single McDonald’s chicken wrap in Klang, I pushed into the night. Just two hours into the ride, around 4:00 AM, my navigation led me into a dense, heavily wooded area.
For 45 long, heart-pounding minutes, I was navigating a pitch-black forest alone. Every rustle in the trees sounded amplified. Just as I managed to fight my way back toward the road, the darkness threw another wild surprise at me: two pitch-black cows materialized out of nowhere, standing inches from my handlebars. They were so close I could have reached out and touched them before my brain even registered they were there.
2. Running on Fumes: Flat Tires & Latching onto Pros
No epic ride comes without mechanical drama—a flat tire forced an unexpected pit stop, putting a dent in my momentum. Worse yet, I missed my last chance to grab a proper meal before starting the heavy climbing toward Fraser’s Hill.
Remarkably, I covered the first 110 km on an almost completely empty stomach, running solely on that initial chicken wrap and a tiny 50-gram bag of nuts.
At kilometer 110, exhausted and running on pure fumes, a professional cycling team flew past me. Instead of dropping back, I dug deep into my reserves, latched onto their wheel train, and held their brisk training pace for an exhilarating 15 to 17 minutes. It was the ultimate mental reset right when I needed it most.
3. Conquering Fraser’s Hill & Finding Community
Reaching the summit at Fraser’s Hill felt like a monumental triumph. At the top, the solo journey briefly turned social. I randomly met four fellow cyclists, and together we shared a well-deserved meal, rested our legs, and took in the sights before starting the journey back down.
4. The 30 km Vehicle Draft & The Final Stretch
The downhill stretch brought its own thrill. Heading down toward Batang Kali, I managed to position myself behind a vehicle moving at a steady pace, drafting behind it for a thrilling 25 to 30 km descent.
By this point, however, the heavy backpack had taken a massive toll on my shoulders and back, forcing me to pull over periodically just to stretch out the muscle fatigue. After coasting down to Batang Kali, I caught the train back to Klang, before pedaling the final stretch back home to Bukit Tinggi, rolling in at 10:30 PM.
Final Thoughts
Looking back at the GPS map, the numbers tell one story: 2,208 meters of climbing and over 9 hours in the saddle. But the real memory is in the moments between the numbers—the quiet anxiety of a dark forest, the thrill of holding a pro pace on empty tanks, and the sheer relief of making it back in one piece.
It was grueling, unpredictable, and unforgettable. Exactly what gravel riding is all about.
